A blaze overnight in a retirement home just outside the northeastern Spanish city of Zaragoza has claimed the lives of eight elderly residents and injured 12 other people, officials said on Sunday.

A spokesman for the regional interior ministry, Gustavo Alcalde, said a caretaker from the nursing home was among the injured and had been hospitalized. He said a quick response by the fire brigade and police had prevented several other casualties, adding that the cause of the fire was still unknown and under investigation.

He called the accident "a very sad day" for Zaragoza.

Hot conditions

A regional health official said one man was in a critical condition with serious burns.

Fire brigade spokesman Carlos Carilla said the fire appead to have broken out in a bedroom on the first floor of the three-story building.

The area is currently affected by a heat wave that began more than a week ago. Earlier this month, a fierce fire burnt out nearly 14,000 hectares (35,595 acres) over five days.
