Deutsche Welle Partner in ESA research project "Sat 'n Surf"

Invited by satellite operator SES ASTRA, Deutsche Welle is participating in a research project on website broadcasting via satellite. The current project, entitled "Sat 'n Surf", is co-funded by the European Space Agency (ESA).

The project's goal is the further development of the "Sat@once" service offered by SES ASTRA, which sends a selection of websites via satellite to every computer connected to a DVB-S-compatible receiver. At present, seven million PC-users within the transmission coverage area of the ASTRA 1G-satellite (Northern Europe/North Africa) have such equipment. 110.000 Users are directly registered with Sat@Once.

"The 'free-to-air' philosophy of Sat@Once fits DW-WORLD.DE perfectly. This allows us to reach also PC-users in Eastern Europe and North Africa in particular who do not have an Internet provider or simply want to use free web services, thus Guido Baumhauer, head of Deutsche Welle's Online Department. "DW-WORLD.DE was already successfully launched on the Sat@Once platform early this year. This project now provides the ideal opportunity to expand our presence and develop new concepts for this push-service."

In the framework of the current 18-month "Sat 'n Surf" project, DW-WORLD.DE will produce exclusive multimedia web content to demonstrate the new technical possibilities of the satellite platform.

Deutsche Welle, Baumhauer continues, must ensure "that our content can be received on as many platforms as possible. Sat@Once is therefore an ideal addition to our www-offer."
In addition to DW-WORLD.DE, other prominent media services such as Spiegel.de or Geo.de are available on the Sat@Once platform.

DW-WORLD.DE is Deutsche Welle's multilingual, multimedia web-offer - information in 30 languages, through text and images, audio and video. News and background stories from Germany, Europe and the world, complemented by information on DW-TV and DW-RADIO programmes. In addition, Deutsche Welle's Online editorial office offers numerous Specials and Reports, as well as interactive German-language courses in many languages.
