DW Akademie in Africa

The digital era arrived in Africa many years ago, and while digitization provides new ways to access information and knowledge, this is not true for everyone. Most Africans are still unable to fully exercise their right to free expression - especially the rural population, women and young people. But the issues that affect them are key to the development of the entire continent and are the focus of media development.

DW Akademie supports traditional media, community radio stations and bloggers in 18 African countries. Our activities focus on strengthening high-quality, independent media and the sustainable development of training systems for media professionals.

On the political level, we advise government agencies and NGOs. Our goal is to strengthen media capacity, particularly among young people, since they will form the foundation of a knowledge-based society on the continent.

Media coverage in times of drought

Multimedia Coverage

At present, East Africa is undergoing one of the worst droughts in more than 60 years. Somaliland is one of the affected places. To help provide local communities with vital information, 16 journalists from the region were trained in multimedia reporting. One of the key questions: How can TV, radio and print journalists use multimedia reporting to report on issues in their country?

Training for video-reporters

The participants included five female journalists, who were picking up a camera for the very first time. The question of how to produce a video report posed the greatest challenge for the young journalists, rather than the technical obstacles. For example, how do you visualize a story in such a way that it will engage audiences without using too many words?

Interview training

In some regions of Somaliland, food and water scarcity might lead to a famine of drastic proportions. Crops and entire harvests are being lost, and shepherds witness their herds dying of thirst. Tens of thousands of people are fleeing their homes. How do I deliver information on the droughts that will help the local population? And how can I record an interview (e.g. at this water point in Waraf)?

Talking to the village elder

As part of their interview training, the participants looked for interesting individuals to speak to and settled on the village elder. How severe is the water shortage at the moment? Do you remember a similar scenario happening in the past? The interviewers needed support from translators, as few of the journalists could understand the interviewee’s dialect.

Video Editing session

Which camera angles and settings are best? After a day of shooting in the area around Hargeisa, the journalists were introduced to the basics of video editing – and they learned that discussing the selection of pictures is part of the process.

Discussing the results

In the future, the journalists want to use audio and video reporting to tell their stories, and also use social media networks to reach a younger audience. The participants were recruited by the Somaliland Journalists Association (SOLJA). The training was funded by Deutsche Welle.
