January's highlights include two new magazine shows, a documentary on Holocaust survivor Eva Kor, an insightful debate on the growing sex tourism in The Gambia and a listen to the world's largest piano.

The world's largest piano

Standing at 4.7 meters tall with a vertical resonance chamber and strings up to 3.9 meters long, German-Latvian piano maker David Klavins has broken his own record from 2017 of the world's largest piano. Euromaxx travelled to the Latvian city of Ventspils to see the grand piano. Join us starting January 4  to find out what this giant piano sounds like.

The liberation of Auschwitz

January 27 marks the 75th anniversary of the liberarion of the Auschwitz concentration camp, where more than a million men, women and children were murdered during the Nazi era. To commemorate this event, DW is devoting a day of programming to Auschwitz, including the documentary film: Eva A-7063 – Victim of Auschwitz Twin Experiments. Eva Mozes Kor was one of the world's most famous Holocaust survivors. At the age of 10, Eva and her twin sister Miriam were subjected to barbaric experiments on twins at the hands of camp doctor Dr. Josef Mengele.

Sports: Going beyond

Starting January 11, we debut Sports Life, the new sports magazine presenting sport stories, interviews with stars and reports from all over the world. Tune in as we explore how sports changes peoples' lives, what it feels like to compete for the refugee team at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and so much more. Every weekend on DW.

Sex tourism in Africa

Youth magazine The 77 Percent heads to Gambia to find out why it has become a hotspot for sex tourism. In South Africa, the magazine meets a young marine biology student who is determined to protect the environment while also providing jobs for locals. Malian rap legend Master Soumy shows off his home city, Bamako. Starting January 25.

Sebastião Salgado wins 2019 German Book Trade Peace Prize

Arts. 21 meets with award-winning Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado. Salgado emigrated to Europe in 1969 during the military dictatorship, leaving behind his childhood in the Amazon. In Europe he found his calling as a photographer documenting war and famine. Today, he works to safeguard the Brazilian rainforest and is still taking photographs well into his 70s. Starting January 18. 

Displaced 

There are more than 70 million refugees and migrants worldwide - more than ever before. Often it is war, violence, persecution, hunger, inhumane living conditions or the consequences of climate change that drive people from their homes. The documentary series Displaced shows why people all over the world are leaving their homelands and setting off into the unknown. The first part of the series begins on 15 January with the film "Oil and Ruin – The Venezuelan Exodus."

How important is our gut?

How often do you think about the health of your intestines? Thanks to the latest medical research, doctors now know that the composition of intestinal flora is responsible for many illnesses, that a variety of gut disorders are the result of food intolerances and that psychological problems can also be linked to our intestines. In Good Shape reveals what steps we can take to keep our guts healthy, starting January 31.
