Dynamo Dresden fined over bull's-head incident

Germany's FA has imposed a fine on second-division club Dynamo Dresden for the behavior of some of their fans at a German Cup match against RB Leipzig. One group of fans tossed a severed bull's head from the stands.

The sports court of the DFB (German football association) on Monday ordered Dynamo Dresden to pay a fine of 60,000 euros ($66,000) for some of its fans behavior during their first-round German Cup match against RB Leipzig in August. The court also ordered that the club close a section of its stadium for its next home match, against Greuther Fürth on November 20. This means the crowd will be reduced by around 9,000 spectators. Dresden have a week to appeal.

The match, which Dresden won 5-4 in a penalty shootout after the two teams had played to a 2-2 draw after extra time - is largely remembered for the actions of a group of Dynamo fans. The group somehow managed to smuggle a severed bull's head into the stands and toss it towards the pitch during the match.

The action was seen as being directed against the "artificial" nature of Leipzig, who are backed by energy-drink company Red Bull.

The presiding judge, Hans E. Lorenz, said the fine also came as a result of some of the anti-Leipzig slogans written on banners hung up by Dresden fans at the match, ones that went "way beyond the free expression of opinion."

Dresden police said on Monday that they had identified seven suspects as having been involved in the incident. They could face misdemeanor charges.
