Germany prides itself on being the land of poets, philosophers and academics. To meet the challenge of international competition, Germany relies on its most valuable resource: education.

In our summer series "Educational Capital", we show how Germans learn and teach; how children, pupils and students are stimulated and challenged. No other subject is as emotive as educational policies in Germany. This is hardly surprising! For the country`s students are trailing in the international PISA ratings. It's no consolation that they live in the land of poets and philosophers.
