International round-up: England frustrated, France booed.

November 16, 2016

England were forced to settle for a draw thanks to a dramatic late Spanish comeback at Wembley. Elsewhere, French fans booed their own team as Les Bleus ended 2016 on a flat note.

England remain unbeaten under manager Gareth Southgate but will be disappointed not to have recorded a famous win over La Roja at Wembley.

Leading 2-0 with only two minutes remaining thanks to an Adam Lallana penalty early in the first half and a diving header from Jamie Vardy early in the second, Southgate's men looked set to be rewarded for an impressive performance.

But Spain's Iago Aspas gave the visitors hope in the 89th minute with a beautiful, curling effort which gave Tom Heaton no chance. Then, after six dramatic minutes of injury time, England's defense finally cracked as Isco chested the ball down and fired a low shot through Heaton's legs from a tight angle.

Friendly: France 0-0 Ivory Coast

Dider Deschamps' Euro 2016 runners-up ended 2016 on a flat note with a 0-0 draw against African Cup of Nations holders, Ivory Coast, in Lens.

Salomon Kalou had the ball in the net in the 11th minute but it was correctly ruled out for offside, the Hertha Berlin striker standing ahead of the play when Franck Kessié's effort came back off the post.

Despite Borussia Dortmund's Ousmane Dembélé starting on the right wing for Les Bleus, it took until the 48th minute for the hosts to register a shot on goal - but Nabil Fékir's effort was turned away.

Nicolas Pépé almost won it for the Ivory Coast in the last minute of normal time but his shot was well saved by Benoît Costil, as the French crowd booed in frustration.
