Authorities in Düsseldorf told news agencies on Saturday that they had recovered the body of Steve Gohouri from the Rhine River near the city of Krefeld on December 31, 2015. The defender, who played 29 games for Gladbach between 2006 and 2009, had been missing since December 12.

Police said that an autopsy had revealed no signs of foul play, declining to add any further details about Gohouri's death.

"This is terrible news," Gladbach commercial manager Max Eberl said in a statement. Steve struck me as a happy person, and that's how I'll remember him."

Gohouri won more than a dozen caps for Ivory Coast over a five year span. He most recently played for fourth-division TSV Steinbach last month.

"Our thoughts are with his family in these difficult hours," the club said in a statement.
