"ExtraSchicht": A night of industrial culture

Former mines, smelting works and other industrial plants will serve as the backdrop of a huge display of light, color and action.

The cultural event "ExtraSchicht" aims to highlight the way the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia changed after the end of the coal and steel era. Some 2,000 artists are part of the program and 200,000 visitors are expected. An extensive transportation network - buses, historic railways and ships, in addition to the regular public transit - will shuttle them to the different venues.
The grounds of the former steelworks Henrichshütte Hattingen will host jazz musicians and piano virtuosos. An artist collective will be performing on the former site of the coal mine Nordsternpark Gelsenkirchen. Another stage is set in front of the disused ovens of the Hansa coking plant in Dortmund. A five-meter-tall doll will be doing a musical performance at the UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein in Essen. These are just some of the 500 events of this year's "ExtraSchicht."

The first "Nacht der Industriekultur " (Night of industrial culture) took place 15 years ago. Since then, over 2 million people have attended the event.
