Federer marches on
May 27, 2015Last year's runner-up Simona Halep has no chance of claiming the 2015 title. The third-seeded Romanian was completely out of sorts on Wednesday, losing her second round match to Croatia's Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 7-5, 6-1.
Lucic-Baroni is only ranked 70th in the world, but she's become Halep's bete moire, having also knocked her out of last year's US Open.
Former men's world number one Rober Federer had a much better day in Paris, comfortably winning his second round match against Marcel Granollers 6-2, 7-6, 6-3. And there were no more court invasions from fans - something that had gotten Federer hot under the collar over the weekend.
"It was just more important that everybody was doing their job, taking it very seriously," Federer said after the match. "I felt that today."
Federer's compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka also booked his place in round three, athough he did drop a set against Serb Dusan Lajovic. The final score there was 6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.
In other action, fifth seed Kei Nishikori of Japan beat Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci 7-5, 6-4, 6-4. And in an over-three hour marathon, Germany's Benjamin Becker defeated Fernando Verdasco of Spain 6-4, 0-6, 1-6, 7-5, 10-8.
