Flemish separatists emerge as biggest winners in Belgian elections - fuelling fears of a split with the Francophone south

In Belgium, the separatist New Flemish Alliance has claimed victory in Sunday's snap election. With most of the votes counted, it's more than doubled its representation in parliament, pushing the Christian Democrats into second place. The result is likely to complicate efforts to form a coalition government, which would have to include the Socialists from francophone Wallonia. Despite their divisive rhetoric during the campaign, leaders of the two camps sounded ready to compromise.
