Around the world an estimated 33.4 million people are infected with HIV. Vienna is playing host to the World Aids Conference from July 18-23. Deutsche Welle takes a look at research and advancements in the field.

Around the world an estimated 33.4 million people are infected with HIV, with two million of them dying from AIDS every year. First witnessed in a clinical setting in 1980 and officially discovered in 1983, HIV has become one of the largest medical disasters in modern times.

From July 18-23, Vienna is playing host to the 18th World Aids Conference with an estimated 20,000 participants from 185 countries taking part.
