Foundation laid for new Bauhaus museum

Dessau's new Bauhaus museum is to scale some 1,600 square meters (18,300 square feet), which would make it second in size after Berlin for the world's largest Bauhaus collection. It is to house some 40,000 works.
Spanish architectural firm Gonzalez Hinz Zabala created the design for the building - selected from among 800 different submissions. Costs for the construction are estimated at around 25 million euros ($26.7 million).
Trailblazing design
Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus architecture, art and design school in Weimar in 1919, before it moved to Dessau in 1925, and then to Berlin in 1932. It was forced by the Nazis to close in 1933.
The Bauhaus movement broke ground in its approach to combining handicrafts and the fine arts. Among its most influential artists and teachers were Lyonel Feininger, Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky.
