France: Chickens for the Taking

October 17, 2012

The little village of Pincé in north-western France is giving laying hens to its residents. The mayor hopes this will help the community to reduce waste and save money.

The benefits are clear: Each hen consumes around 150 kilos of organic waste a year AND produces some 200 eggs. Every household in Pincé to submit an application is given two hens for free. However they must agree to take good care of the animals and promise they won't wind up being served for dinner.
