France stops 'advanced' terror attack plot

March 24, 2016

The French interior minister has said police arrested a man on Friday in the "advanced stages" of a terrorist plot. The arrest comes as Europe remains on high alert following the attacks in Brussels earlier this week.

Bernard Cazeneuve said on Thursday there were no clear links between the arrest and the terrorist attacks that occured in Brussels or Paris.

The man, a French citizen, was arrested during a police raid in Argenteuil, a community on the northern outskirts of Paris.

The interior minister said a bomb squad was still searching the premises and that much of the area was on lockdown.

France, like countries all over Europe, is still reeling from the Brussels attacks that killed 31 people and injured 300 on Tuesday. In November, Paris was also the site of a deadly terror attack, when militants armed with guns and bombs killed 130 people and injured more than 300.

French authorities have arrested 75 people in connection with terrorist plots since the beginning of the year, according to Cazeneuve.
