Generation What?

April 4, 2017

"Generation What?" is a Europe-wide study on how young people see their lives and the world around them. How do today’s 18 to 34-year-olds feel about work, family, friends, love, sex and politics?

Some 940,000 young people in 35 European countries took part in the online survey. Our documentary meets members of "Generation What?" to discuss the results.

Millennials - the generation born in the last years of the last millennium- come in for a lot of criticism. Also dubbed  "Generation Y," their overriding features seem to be their political apathy and lactose intolerance. But there’s more to them that that. Digital natives, permanently connected on Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat, they’re a generation born and raised in a peaceful Europe, with the Euro and open borders. Presenter Sandra Rieß talks to members of Generation What? - her own generation - in her Berlin kitchen. Over potato salad with vegan curry sausage, she chats with video-blogger Wana Limar, Olympic kayaker Markus Gross and actor Louis Klamroth about the survey. How important are Germany and Europe in today’s world? Are Millennials tolerant or conservative? In Cologne, she talks to Moop Mama frontman Keno about marriage and terrorism. And she asks Christian Helten, editor of German online magazine "jetzt," about the role played by the Internet in young people’s lives.
