Boomgarden is currently a state secretary at the ministry in Berlin, and is to be replaced there by the current ambassador to Paris, Peter Ammon. German ambassadors are usually career diplomats.

The ministry said the changes had been approved by Chancellor Angela Merkel's cabinet. They include Hans-Juergen Heimsoeth as new ambassador to Ukraine. He is currently consul general in New York.

The current German ambassador to Iraq, Hanns Heinrich Schumacher, is to move to Thailand as ambassador.

Michael Witter was named ambassador to Australia and Ambassador Volkmar Wenzel is to move from the Syrian capital Damascus to the Saudi capital Riyadh.

The new ambassador to Denmark is to be Christoph Jessen, and to Switzerland, Axel Berg. The next appointment to the Pakistan capital Islamabad is to be Michael Koch.

The changes are set to take place this summer.

The moves were first reported by the daily newspaper Handelsblatt on Tuesday. It said the embassy in France would be taken over by Reinhard Schaefers, currently posted to Kyiv, but this has not been confirmed yet.
