Bayern to face Dortmund in German Cup

April 9, 2015

Holders of the German Cup Bayern Munich have drawn Dortmund in the semifinals of the competition, in a replay of last year's final. Minnows Arminia Bielefeld are to play Wolfsburg.

Cup holders Bayern Munich were paired with arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund in the semifinal of this year's German Cup competition.

The two sides met in last year's German Cup final, which record-breaking Bundesliga title winners Bayern won 2-0 after extra time.

The draw for the contest took place immediately after Bayern's Wednesday evening defeat of opponents Bayer Leverkusen. The clash - which finished goalless after extra time - saw Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer emerge as hero; the Bavarians winning 5-3 on penalities.

"That's okay for us, if you want to win the cup you need to beat the best teams, so it's Dortmund for us," said Bayern coach Pep Guardiola.

The pairing represents a chance for Dortmund to avenge last season's defeat and to perhaps capture silverware in a disappointing season that saw them slump to the bottom of the table before staging a second-half-of-the-season recovery.

Earlier, third-tier side Bielefeld were the authors of a classic German Cup upset, knocking out Bundesliga high-fliers Borussia Mönchengladbach - also in a penalty shoot-out.

It means Bielefeld go on to host Wolfsburg, the 2-1 winners of a Tuesday night cup encounter with Freiburg.

Bayern and Dortmund's semifinal will be played on April 28, while Bielefeld and Wolfsburg meet on April 29, with the final to be played in Berlin on May 30.
