Germany against France - a big rivalry but never at the Euros
Germany face hosts France in the Euro 2016 semifinals but they have never met before at a European Championship. Their four encounters at a major tournament came at World Cups, including THAT game and THAT foul in 1982.
1958 World Cup in Sweden
After the semifinal defeat to hosts Sweden, Germany coach Sepp Herberger sent his team shopping. The majority of them came back with ashtrays as souvenirs. In the third-place playoff they met France for the first time in a competitive game.
Germany´s heaviest defeat
In the 6-3 win for France, Just Fontaine scored his 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th goals of the World Cup, a record that still stands. Without key players like Fritz Walter, Horst Eckel or the young Uwe Seeler, Germany were overwhelmed.
1982 World Cup in Spain
In the World Cup semifinal in 1982, the result was very different. The epic drama came in four parts. Pierre Littbarski gave Germany the lead after 17 minutes but Michel Platini (seen here) soon equalized from the spot.
A foul to end all fouls...
The incident which the game will always be remembered for came in the 57th minute. France's Patrick Battiston was running in on goal before being poleaxed by Germany goalkeeper Toni Schumacher. Amazingly no foul was given but Battiston was left unconscious.
Battiston badly hurt
Battiston damaged neck vertebrae and lost three teeth in the incident. Schumacher carried on regardless, chewing on his gum. He said afterwards: "If that is all that is wrong with him, I'll pay for his crowns."
Fischer overhead kick
Extra time was the third act of the drama. France take a 3-1 lead thanks to goals from Marius Tresor and Alain Giresse but Germany fight back to 3-3 through Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and an acrobatic overhead kick from Klaus Fischer. The game goes to penalties.
Stielike fails, Schumacher saves
The final act. France edge ahead in the shootout when Uli Stielike's effort is saved. However, Schumacher blocks penalties from Didier Six and Maxime Bossis to help send Germany through to the final. They would go on to lose 3-1 to Italy.
Mexico World Cup 1986
Another semifinal, another France-Germany. After eliminating Brazil in the quarterfinals, the French were full of confidence. But Franz Beckenbauer's team had other ideas. Germany needed only 90 minutes to defeat the reigning European champions. France goalkeeper Joel Bats was at fault for the opening goal, a free kick from Andreas Brehme.
Dogged, awkward, disciplined
The French strive for 80 minutes to make up for their keeper's blunder and dominate the match. But Rudi Völler finishes off a late counter attack to reinforce Germany's reputation as a tournament team. However, they would go on to lose in the final against Diego Maradona's Argentina.
2014 World Cup in Brazil
The most recent meeting of the continental rivals came only two years ago in the last eight of the 2014 World Cup. An early goal from Mats Hummels at the Maracana in Rio De Janeiro is enough to put Germany through to the semifinals.
Neuer denies Benzema at the death
The French create several good chances near the end. The last and best falls to Karim Benzema but not for the first time Manuel Neuer in the Germany goal saves the team. Germany go on to crush Brazil in the semifinals and edge Lionel Messi's Argentina in the final.
Euro 2016 in France
Another semifinal, another clash with France. This time though it's the European Championship finals and not the World Cup. A mouthwatering prospect featuring the hosts against the reigning world champions.
Improvisation required for depleted Germany
Mario Gomez injured and out of the Euros. Sami Khedira injured and out of the semifinal. Bastian Schweinsteiger injured and doubtful. Mats Hummels suspended. Germany coach Joachim Löw will have to shuffle his pack.
