1. Coming Home - A Journey with Eliane Fernandes Ferreira through Brazil
Eliane Fernandes Ferreira decided to leave her native Brazil at the tender age of twenty and start a new life in Germany. She now lives in Hamburg, together with her husband Peter and their thirteen year old twins Anna and Julia. An ethnologist, Ferreira researches indigenous people for the University of Bremen. More than ten thousand kilometres separate Hamburg from Apiwtxa, the village home of the Ashaninka tribe in Brazil’s Acre Province.
We join our protagonist on an expedition to her native Brazil. The journey starts in the town where Eliane Fernandes Ferreira was born, Poços de Caldas in the south east of Brazil. It is an idyllic spa town with hot springs located in topography similar to that of a volcanic crater. But Ferreira’s ancestors came from the north of the country, in the Amazon basin. She is the great granddaughter of a wealthy rubber manufacturer who sought his fortune in the Brazilian jungle. Eliane Fernandes Ferreira says “it was my dream to travel to the roots of my family and see what remains of this period and get to know the place where my grandfather was born.” Together with our protagonist we explore a Brazil that cannot be found in tourist brochures.

2. Samba and Sauerkraut - German Myths at the Carnival in Rio
This year’s carnival in Rio was rather special. Who would have expected to see Valkyries parading through Rio de Janeiro? The festivities also included fairy tale characters, symphonies, inventions and German specialties. Preparations began a year earlier when one of the city’s leading samba schools, Unidos de Jijuca, decided to take on a German theme for the latest procession in Rio’s famous Sambódromo carnival arena. Four thousand participants would give a samba presentation of German cultural heritage in front of more than 70,000 onlookers.
This was no easy undertaking because Unidos da Tijuca, named after the district it comes from, entered the competition as reigning champion. It faced stiff competition from eleven other schools. Unidos da Tijuca’s Paulo Barros is one of Brazil’s most innovative Carnival experts. German myths, fairy tales, technology, culture and culinary specialties provided the material for a fantastic 80 minute long journey through the city of Rio.
Preparations took almost an entire year as initial plans were followed by the hunt for sponsors, costume designs, building the floats and the final presentation. Our documentary follows this major project from start to finish, beginning with the visit by a team of researchers to Germany in April 2012 and ending with the carnival festivities in February 2013. This film documents a great event in the making, featuring Brazilian rhythms, German specialties. It is a mix of clichés and contradictions, just like samba and sauerkraut, brought together for the world’s leading Carnival show.
