GM will not sell Opel - Chronicle of months of political bargaining and tortuous negotiations

It involved months of political bargaining and tortuous negotiations. But now the deal under which US automaker General motor was supposed to sell its European subsidary Opel to Canadian auto parts maker Magna is off. GM says it has decided to keep Opel - a huge about-turn - because the business enviroment has improved. The company says it will go ahead with restructuring plans in Europe. But the decision has prompted furious reactions here in Germany.... the economics minister describing it as "completley unacceptable". Unions - concerned about the future of thousands of jobs- are calling for warning strikes across Europe.
