US win Solheim Cup

The biennial Solheim Cup, which pits the best American women golfers against their European counterparts, was hosted by the Sankt Leon-Rot Golf Club. It was the first time a German venue had staged the event. And if organizers want dramatic finishes, they should consider bringing the competition back to Germany sooner rather than later.

Cup holders Europe led for virtually all of the three-day event and came into Sunday's singles pairings with a 10-6 advantage, knowing that fourteen points would be enough to retain the trophy.

The early part of the day went exactly to Europe's liking. And when Sweden's Anna Nordqvist beat Stacy Lewis 2&1, the Europeans needed only to halve one of the final five pairings to prevail.

Instead, the Americans booked a clean sweep. Angela Stanford recorded a clutch 2&1 victory of Suzann Pettersen. The Norwegian had been at the center of controversy earlier when she refused to concede an 18-inch-putt, flouting the etiquette of the event.

Superstar Michelle Wie then thumped Sweden's Caroline Hedwall 6&4, meaning the Solheim Cup went down to the final pairing. In it, Paula Creamer dominated Germany's Sandra Gal, winning 4&3.

The 2015 Solheim Cup ranks as one of the greatest comebacks in the history of team golf - on par with Europe's fightback in 2012 Ryder Cup and late surge by the US in the 1999 edition of that event.
