Grand opening for Berlin's hip new hostel

Berlin’s biggest youth hostel has just opened in the fashionable area of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, with the first guests expected on July 1st. The first few weeks are already fully booked.

This is one of the 6-bed dorms – a white cube fitted out with custom-made bunk beds. The hostel has a total of 445 beds in 125 en-suite rooms. One night’s accommodation starts at 25 euros a night.

It also houses an assembly hall for 180 people and 16 meeting rooms for seminars, workshops and events. In an open, minimalist design, the hostel is integrated into a listed brick building that was once a school and a university. The state of Berlin leased the building to the German Youth Hostel Association (DJH) for 30 years without charge. They in turn invested ten million euros into the modernization of the building.

A stone’s throw from the bustling area around Warschauer Strasse and the world-famous techno club Berghain, the hostel couldn’t be better situated for young visitors to Berlin.

Around 40,000 bookings have already been made for the second half of 2016 according to the DJH who operate the hostel. Ostkreuz station has extensive transport connections and is just a few minutes walk from the new DJH hostel, now the fourth in Berlin.

Guests include families, backpackers, school trips, young groups, couples and solo travelers. Last year there were around 10 million overnight stays in German hostels.

DJH is a not-for-profit organization founded over one hundred years ago. It has the world’s largest hostel network with more than 500 establishments across the Germany. Membership with the DJH gives you access to over 4,500 youth hostels worldwide.
