Green Aircraft - The Future of Aviation

Every day there are more than 80,000 flights worldwide. Researchers are working on developing airplanes that use less fuel in a bid to make them more environmentally friendly.

Since the start of the jet age fifty years ago air traffic has increased enormously. That puts a lot of pressure on the environment and people living near airports the world over. Planes emit two per cent of greenhouses gases worldwide and are responsible for as much as eight per cent of global warming. That is why engineers are developing new aircraft engines that reduce fuel consumption to a minimum. Many aircraft manufacturers like Airbus and Mitsubishi are showing interest in the project.


As well as saving fuel, engineers are also looking for ways to reduce soot particle emissions from aircraft. One alternative is to invent zero emission airplanes with electric engines. This is a low energy alternative to conventional engines. So will electric engines revolutionize the future of air traffic?
