Nicolai Mueller could be back for Hamburg towards the end of the season after undergoing successful surgery on his injured knee on Wednesday.

The forward scored the only goal early in Hamburg's 1-0 win over Augsburg in their Bundesliga opener on Saturday but then it all went wrong.

He excitedly ran to the corner flag doing a sort of helicopter celebration. He stumbled into the corner flag and collapsed into a heap, clutching his knee. Müller was substituted and tests showed he had injured his cruciate ligament, meaning up to seven months out of the game.

But he was all smiles on Wednesday following his surgery.

He also posted on Instagram and said: "Hey guys, first of all THANKS for the many best wishes in the last few days. I have dealt with the operation well today."

Media reports say Hamburg are considering dipping into the transfer market to find a temporary replacement for Müller, so often their talisman last season.
