Healing Spider Silk

Spider silk is developing into a valuable material in medical research. It can help severed nerves grow back together, or be used as a foundation for artificial skin.

The method has proven effective in animal models. But one big problem is that spider silk is difficult to harvest, and large-scale production from spiders alone is impossible. Another research group in Bayreuth has developed a method for producing the spider proteins in genetically modified bacteria. .
