How Important Is Free Speech?

What does freedom of speech mean to you? That’s the question that we’re tackling on The 77 Percent this week. We talk to young people around Africa about why they think it’s important to speak up.

We meet a young man in Kampala, who was detained and tortured for his support of opposition leader Bobi Wine. We meet Zimbabwean comedians who are using humor to address difficult topics. We talk to a group of feminists who have started a radio show in Juba and in South Africa, an activist tells us why we should hold politicians to account.

South Africa: Holding politicians to account

After a fire in one of Cape Town’s informal settlements rendered hundreds of people homeless, social justice activist Nkosikhona Swartbooi confronted the responsible minister, Lindiwe Sisulu during a visit to the area. The confrontation resulted in a court case against the activist.

Ugandan opposition supporter: ‘I was beaten and detained’

Uganda’s elections in January 2021 were widely criticized by international bodies for their unlevel playing field and violence surrounding the vote. A Ugandan opposition member and supporter of presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, better known as Bobi Wine, exclusively told DW how he was detained and tortured in the weeks after the election.

Zimbabwe’s Bustop TV uses satire to talk about politics

Health care, police harassment, local governance - the comedians at Bustop TV cover all the issues that Zimbabweans deal with in their daily lives. They disguise their messages in humor, but that is not always enough to evade censorship.

Gendertalk211: Talking feminism in South Sudan

Feminism – that’s still a taboo topic in many parts of society in South Sudan. With their radio show, Gendertalk211, a group of South Sudanese women are trying to raise awareness and talk openly about the issues affecting women in their community.
