HP Could Cut 2,000 German Jobs

US computer giant Hewlett-Packard (HP) could slash up to 2,000 jobs in Germany, according to a WirtschaftsWoche weekly on Wednesday. HP's works council expects lay-offs of 1,000-2,000 people in the country, the magazine reported. Service-sector jobs in particular were expected to move to lower cost countries. HP's new CEO, Mark Hurd, had announced Tuesday that the company would cut 14,500 jobs worldwide over the next year and a half. A company spokesman confirmed that Germany would be affected, without providing numbers. Around 9,000 people work for HP in Germany.
