Iran nuclear talks fail again

The UN's nuclear watchdog has said that it has again failed to reach a deal with Iran over investigations into the country's controversial nuclear program. No date has been set for further talks.

The deputy director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed on Thursday that talks with Iran a day earlier failed to yield clear results. Herman Nackaerts told reporters in at the headquarters of the United Nations' nuclear watchdog in Vienna that a document agreeing enhanced inspections of Tehran's nuclear program had not materialized.

"We had discussions on the structured approach document but could not finalize the document," Nackaerts said, hours after his team returned from Wednesday's talks in Tehran.

"Our commitment to continued dialogue is unwavering. We will work hard now to resolve the remaining differences but time is needed to reflect on the way forward," he added.

"We haven't agreed yet on a date for the next meeting."

The failure to reach a deal came as a fresh setback to international negotiators seeking to acess sites, scientists and documents that the agency believes may be linked to Iran's suspected efforts to develop nuclear weapons.

Despite Western fears, Iran asserts that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.

Wednesday's meeting came less than two weeks before six world powers, including Germany are due to meet Iranian officials for negotiations in Kazakhstan on February 26. The talks are to focus on the Islamic state's atomic activities.
