Across Africa, approximately 43 percent of the total prison population comprises of pretrial detainees. Inmates often spend years behind bars waiting for their cases to be heard in a court of law. Most of those in pretrial detention are poor young men who have very little understanding of their rights. The organisation UP Zambia in Lusaka provides legal and social assistance to the inmates.
