Synthetic fuel for vehicles was produced at the Leuna chemicals complex near the German city of Leipzig for decades. Now algae are showing their power as a biofuel.

Bred in reactors, they produce valuable oils and vitamins. The southern German company Subitec makes and sells the reactors.Subitec is a spin-off from the German research organization, the Fraunhofer Institute. It sells the plastic reactors to industry and research institutes. Peter Ripplinger is Subitec's business manager and he shows us how algaes can be used for these processes.
