Innovative irrigation

With their harvests threatened by droughts, Ethiopian farmers are turning to novel irrigation.

Project goal: Sustainable farming, upgrading existing irrigation systems
Project scale: Benefitting over 60 million people across the region
Project investment: 2.2 million euros until 2012

Small farmers south of the Sahara are increasingly seeing their harvests devastated by droughts and flash floods. In Ethiopia, some 80 percent of the population is affected. A German-Israeli project aims to ease farming and agriculture in the region. It's sharing sustainable farming know-how and providing technical support, with engineers training not only farmers but also staff from the ministry for agriculture. Together, they've set up small-scale irrigation systems in four different locations.
