Inside Europe: Digging up the Spanish past

It’s 80 years since the beginning of the Spanish civil war, which raged from 1936 to 1939 and which led to four decades of dictatorship under the conflict’s victor, General Francisco Franco. But this is also turning out to be a significant year for another reason. A court in Argentina has opened an investigation into human rights abuses committed in Spain during the civil war and its aftermath.
