Journalists under fire: Who cares?

Around the world, journalists are threatened with violence, imprisonment or even murder. According to the latest report by Reporters Without Borders, press freedom is now under threat in some European countries, too. What does this mean for democracy? Guests: Antje Bauer (Freelance Journalist), Vladimir Esipov (DW), Shi Ming (Freelance Journalist).

Antje Bauer is a freelance journalist. In her work training for the DW Academie, she travels to regions like the Middle East. She says: "Not only journalists are killed — truth is killed in times of 'alternative facts'. What remains are attitudes and prejudices."

Vladimir Esipov has worked in Russia for the Axel Springer publishing group, and is now based in Germany, working for DW Russian-language programming. He says: "The authoritarian states do not really need to kill journalists — they have much more sophisticated instruments to bring the media under their control."

Shi Ming, a freelance journalist, was born and raised in Beijing. He left China in the late 1980s, and has worked in Germany since then. He says: "The boundaries between journalists and non-journalists are blurring, which makes it more difficult to protect press freedom."
