Man-made islands for seabirds

In the US in 1957, the state of Virginia finished an ambitious project – a series of roads, bridges and tunnels connecting cities and America’s largest naval base along its coast. Today it’s often clogged with traffic, so plans are underway to widen the roads and add new tunnels. But with thousands of seabirds nesting in the path of the project, it is not without controversy.
