UK police make arrest in jogger case

August 10, 2017

London police say they have detained a 50-year-old man suspected of pushing a woman into the path of a bus. The arrest came after officers released security footage of the jogger and appealed to the public for help.

Police said the man was arrested on Thursday on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and taken to a police station in south London.

A police statement said he was later "released under investigation pending further enquiries."

Earlier in the week, officers released security camera footage showing a male jogger knocking a 33-year-old woman in front of a double-decker bus on Putney Bridge in the city's southwest. The approaching bus had to swerve out the way, narrowly avoiding a collision. The victim suffered minor injuries from the incident, which occurred in May.

The jogger appeared to return along the same route about 15 minutes later, and although the woman attempted to speak to him, he did not stop to acknowledge her.

Authorities said Thursday's arrest came after a "good response" to their appeal for help in tracking down the offending jogger.

The 50-year-old has not been charged and his name hasn't been released. Police said they were still looking for other witnesses.
