A man in Berlin attacked a female passerby with a chainsaw on Monday, seriously injuring her and then sawing off his own hand, according to the police. Both are lying in hospital in a critical condition. The man of Italian origin apparently fled into a private garden after a car accident and got hold of the chain saw. He then ran out onto the road and assaulted a 35-year-old woman unknown to him who was passing by with her sister and her two children. The victim, who tried to ward off the attack, ended up with grave cuts on her throat. Police said the motive for the attack remained unknown though the perpetrator is said to be mentally instable after his wife was delivered to a psychiatric clinic recently.
