The blast occurred in the town of Landi Kotal near Pakistan's border with Afghanistan.

In addition to the casualties, some shops and cars were destroyed.

There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack. Islamist militants have been responsible for past attacks in the area.

A Taliban-led insurgency has used the border region with Afghanistan as a base for its fight against the government of Pakistan, allies of the United States.

A district administration official said that some of the victims were from the Zakha Khel tribe, which has supported the government's efforts to go after militants in the area.
