Media freedom heroes

Today, on World Press Freedom Day, we want to introduce you to five heroes. Every day these media professionals fight for freedom of expression, usually without public recognition.

The manager of a local radio station who won't quit, even in the face of violent threats. A trade unionist who's defending the rights of imprisoned journalists. A reporter who's giving young people a voice. It's these seemingly small stories that we want to highlight on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day.

People who fight for freedom of expression and information every day, usually without recognition. For us, they are heroes of media freedom and they show us that, with courage, creativity and perseverance, it's possible to become an agent of social change.

DW Akademie is partnering with such unsung heroes on a variety of projects, such as the creation of a press council in Myanmar, media initiatives for young people in Moldova and community radio stations in South Sudan. Together we're working to develop and strengthen the media, and thereby provide sustainable support for human rights.
