The eighth hat trick of the season for Barcelona's Argentine star Lionel Messi has given him 68 total goals this season, breaking a record set by German striker Gerd Müller in the 1972-73 season when he played for Bayern Munich.

Messi's three goals in Barcelona's 4-1 win over Malaga gave him 46 in La Liga matches, which is also a record. He also has 14 in the Champions League, three in the Spanish Super Cup, two in the King's Cup, two in the Club World Cup and one in the European Supercup.

Two more league matches and the King' Cup final mean Messi could add to his staggering goal tally before the end of the season.
