At least 12 people have died and 18 people have been injured in a tourist bus accident in Mexico.

The tour bus lost control on Tuesday and rolled over during an excursion to ancient ruins in the state of Quintana Roo on the Caribbean coast.

Some 31 passengers were on board, including citizens of the US, Brazil and Sweden, authorities said. They had been traveling as part of a cruise ship excursion, according to a statement from Costa Maya, the company that operated the bus.

The tourists were headed to the archaeological site of Chacchoben, a Mayan ruin south of the resort town of Tulum.

A child was among the victims, and seven Americans and two Swedes were among the injured, Civil Defense spokesman Vicente Martin said. The nationalities of the deceased have not yet been revealed.

The state government said it had yet to determine the cause of the accident.

Video images showed the bus lying on its side in vegetation next to a two-lane highway, with some survivors lying on the pavement and others walking around.
