Schumacher: 'Encouraging signs'

Michael Schumacher has shown some signs of improvement, his agent has said. The German Formula One legend has been in a coma since a skiing accident in France at the end of December.

Michael Schumacher's agent, Sabine Kehm, released a statement on Wednesday saying that the seven-time Formula One champion was displaying some small signs of improvement after his skiing accident at the French resort Meribel on December 29.

"We are and remain confident that Michael will pull through and will wake up," Kehm said. "There sometimes are small, encouraging signs, but we also know that this is the time to be very patient."

While skiing off-piste with his son, Schumacher fell and hit his head on a rock. Despite wearing a helmet, Schumacher suffered serious head injuries and has been in a medically-induced coma ever since in the French town of Grenoble. At the end of January, doctors there began reducing his sedation to gradually bring him out of the coma.

"It was clear from the start that this will be a long and hard fight," Kehm said. "Michael has suffered severe injuries. It is very hard to comprehend for all of us that Michael, who had overcome a lot of precarious situations in the past, has been hurt so terribly in such a banal situation."
