August 29, 2012

Apart from television and the Internet, DW's programs can also be enjoyed while flying. A growing number of airlines are offering DW content as in-flight entertainment.

DW has sharpened its focus on in-flight entertainment (IFE) offerings worldwide, expanding on the partnership with airlines that it initiated in 2008. This year, its shows have been taken up by Aeroflot, Air Namibia, Eva Air, Iberia, Korean Air, LAN Airlines, Lufthansa, Malaysia Airlines and Somon Air.

The IFE content is selected from DW TV magazines such as Kino and Made in Germany. IFE also features documentaries from the DW Transtel catalog on topics ranging from the environment to the automotive world and from fashion to technology. DW Transtel has been on the market for more than 40 years now, offering international partners an interesting palette of television programs.

"Airlines are looking for all kinds of programs," commented Ulrich Wartmann, who heads DW's Distribution Europe Department and distribution of in-flight entertainment. "When it comes to documentaries, they want nature, travel and lifestyle programs. Science is a popular topic, too."

The IFE selection is currently available in German, English, Spanish and Arabic, with a number of shows featuring subtitle options.

"Something we pride ourselves on is our multilingual capability," said Wartmann. "We can provide quality programming in several different languages and make it available in numerous markets."

In the future, DW aims to increase its range of IFE lifestyle programs by creating new formats and expanding the Euromaxx series.

DW regularly takes part in IFE-related events, such as the Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX) TV Market, and will do so in the coming year.
