Unlike the Dutch and the Finns, most Germans would not want to do without one- and two-cent coins, the results of a public opinion poll carried out by market research institute Forsa showed on Wednesday. In a poll carried out on behalf of the weekly magazine Stern, 54 percent of Germans were against the elimination of the tiny copper coins. Of people questioned, 41 percent said they would have nothing against abandoning the coins and 5 percent said they had no particular opinion on the matter. As from Wednesday, retailers in the Netherlands will no longer use one- and two-cent coins, rounding prices at the check-out to the nearest five cents. A similar system has been widely used in Finland since the launch of euro banknotes and coins in 2002. The German finance ministry insists there is no question of abolishing the coins for the time being.
