Philipp Kohlschreiber has been beaten by Andy Murray in three-sets during a rain-delayed Munich Open final.

World number three and top seed in Munich, Murray, needed just over three hours to complete a 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 7-6 (7-4) win over the 31-year old German. Kohlschreiber, ranked 24th in the world, fought hard in front of his home crowd in the Bavarian capital.

"It hurts when you play so hard in a game but come up short," said Kohlschreiber after the match. "But that's tennis and I'll keep fighting."

Heavy rain delays meant the match resumed on Monday morning after only 23 minutes could be played on Sunday, the scheduled day of the final.

Play resumed with Kohlschreiber ahead 3-2 in the first set and both players held serve to force a tie-break. Murray snatched the first set in the tie-break after almost an hour. After Kohlschreiber held serve to win the second set, Murray clinched victory in the third with his second match point.

"It's unbelievable," Murray told the Bayerischer Rundfunk broadcaster. "It was a very tough match."

Kohlschreiber, 31, has yet to win an ATP title in 2015. It is the fourth time he has been a losing finalist at the Munich Open, having won his home tournament twice previously.

The win was the 32nd title of Murray's career but his first career title on clay.
