According to the German news agency dpa, a large slice of the notorious Nazi holiday resort Prora on the Baltic island of Rügen is set to be auctioned off in September. The fetching price for a 2.5 kilometer stretch of real estate, including beaches, five hotel blocks and forest land, is a modest €125,000. The government's previous attempts to find a buyer proved unsuccessful and Berlin has now turned to the Norddeutsche Grundstücksauktionen auction house to re-launch the sale in a bid to top up its depleted coffers. Locals are none too pleased at the prospect of a vast hotel complex on their doorstep, with the island's smaller hotels worried they may be put out of business. The resort was originally built in the 1930s as part of the Nazis' "Kraft durch Freude" ("Strength through Joy") program.
