December 23, 2014

With his win under floodlights at Madonna di Campiglio, Felix Neureuther is now the most successful German male in World Cup alpine skiing history. His 10th career victory also saw a double success for Germany.

Felix Neureuther earned his eighth successive podium place in the slalom discipline after beating German team mate Fritz Dopfer by 0.82 seconds at Madonna di Campiglio, one of the most prestigious courses on the World Cup circuit.

In warm and slushy conditions, the 30-year-old from Garmisch Partenkirchen finished Monday in a combined time of one minute 40.57 seconds. Jens Byggmark of Sweden was third behind Dopfer.

"It's amazing. The last time we skied in Madonna, I came really close after also winning the first leg," Neureuther said. "This time it worked out really, really good for me."

"To become the German with most World Cup wins does not really matter to me. What matters is to be the most consistent slalom specialist this season," the German added.

Two years ago, Neureuther had been beaten by Austrian Marcel Hirscher in Madonna, but the three-times World Cup winner, hampered by a cold, was off the pace this time, finishing seventh after a poor first run.

With the win, Neureuther moved 24 points ahead of Hirscher in the World Cup slalom standings. In the overall point score, Hirscher is now 34 points behind leader Kjetil Jansrud from Norway, who does not race slalom.
