New Year's gala
January 16, 2013The German Foreign Ministry, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester (DSO) and DW collaborated on the event to ring in the New Year. Prominent guests included Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle, who thanked DW Director General Erik Bettermann for Deutsche Welle's exceptional efforts on behalf of culture and the exchange of knowledge. The program started off with Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" in a brief setting for winds, and continued with a fanfare-like passage from Monteverdi's "L'Orfeo." Composer Richard Wagner was saluted to mark the 200th anniversary of his birth. The 50th anniversary of the German-French Friendship Treaty received symbolic musical expression in pieces by French composers Debussy, Ravel and Saint-Saens. Jazzy wind arrangements of spirituals penned by Argentine composer Enrique Crespo wrapped up the evening.
