Balaraba Ramat Yakubu has defied traditional ideas about submissive, subjugated women living in countries under strict Islamic rule. Despite coming from the religiously conservative north of Nigeria, she’s become one of the leading lights in a genre known as love literature. Her books, written in her native Hausa language, tackle issues like women’s education and forced marriage.
