Norway: Whales in Hot Water

April 3, 2013

Until recently whales were only sighted by the Vesterålen - a group of islands off the coast of Norway - during the Arctic summer season. A few years ago, however, some began staying up north during the winter as well.

The mating season in the winter used to find whales migrating en masse to more southerly climes around the equator. Scientists suspect that the changes in the animals’ behavior are due to climate warming. As temperatures in the Arctic Ocean have risen, so have the stocks of fish near the Arctic Circle. As for the whales, it tends to be the young males that stay up north.
